Sept I999- Oct 2014: Associate Professor, Health Policy and Management, School of Medicine.
The success of the Masters programme that I had been coordinating for 18 months was such that the University decided to re-structure the post and create an Associate Professor position to lead further developments in this area. I applied for this post on an open external competition and was appointed at Associate Professor level.

April 1998-August 1999 (half-time post).: Assistant Professor, Health Policy and Management, School of Medicine

1995 – 1998: Healthcare Management Specialist, Institute of Public Administration
Responsible for promoting good management practice throughout the public health service, through the design and delivery of appropriate and innovative management education(M.A., Postgrad Diploma) and development programmes. This Institute is a government supported Institute whose mandate is to provide formal accredited programmes of education and CPD for the public sector

1992 – 1995: UNICEF Research Fellow in Health Research & Development, Centre for Social Research, University of Malawi
My role was that of PI and included project design, proposal writing, coordinating bids to funders, budget management, recruitment, training and management of large teams of research staff (15-20 research staff per project), data analysis and report writing for a range of projects. This was primarily a research role, although I did some teaching in the Psychology Department and in the School of Business and Marketing.

Other Leadership, Administrative and Health Services Roles

2004 – 2014: Director, Centre for Global Health, Trinity College, University of Dublin (TCD).
I established this as a self-financing cross-school interdisciplinary centre in 2004. We have a vibrant expanding research portfolio and have been very successful in attracting research funding from EU, UN and government and development organisations. In addition we have established a successful Masters in Global Health (the first in Europe) and an International Doctorate in Global Health involving 5 African and two North American academic partners.

1999 – 2014: (Programme Director for M.Sc. Health Services Management, Health Policy and Management, School of Medicine TCD
As Director of an M.Sc. Health Services Management programme, I have developed and expanded the programme such that it now has an average of 50 students enrolled each year. This is a self-financing programme that now employs an associate professor, a lecturer/coordinator and an executive officer as well as a postdoc researcher (for a one year period). It is one of the most successful postgraduate programmes in College and is recognised by all employers in the Irish health services. This year I have succeeded in attracting funding from the Health Services Executive for 14 full student scholarships on the programme.

1998 – 1999: Part-time Co-ordinator on M.Sc. in Health Services Management, School of Medicine, TCD
I was responsible for all academic and managerial aspects of this newly established 2-year part-time Masters programme. I lectured on the programme and supervised research dissertations

1998 – 1999: Part-time Organisational Development Specialist, Midland Health Board
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, I advised and assisted the organisation in changing its structures, service delivery methods and processes. As a member of the Corporate Team, I played a key role in the development of policy and in planning and prioritising service developments and overseeing change management programmes across the Board’s services.

1991 – 1991: Project Officer, The Audit Commission, UK
This work consisted of an audit of all surgical services in the Health Authority and compilation and presentation of a report detailing recommendations for improvements in the management and organisation of surgical services across two hospital sites in the new Wirral NHS Trust.

1990 – 1990: Consumer Services Project Manager, Greater Glasgow Health Board
Primarily concerned with a consumer service project for the Mental Health Unit of the Greater Glasgow Health Board (catchment population 1.2 million) producing a report outlining recommendations for improvements in the quality of services, within a “value for money” ethos. On completion of the work I was invited to join the Health Board’s Quality team.

1988 – 1990: Clinical Psychologist, Crichton Royal Hospital, Dumfries & Gartnavel Royal Hospital, Glasgow
Providing services to children and adolescents through G.P practices, health centres and a residential adolescent centre) and Gartnavel Royal Hospital, Glasgow (providing child and adult psychology services to Clydebank Health Centre). Teaching commitments included lecturing on the Clinical Psychology M.Sc. Course, lecturing to psychiatric nurses and registrars doing their MRC Psych.
